5 Ways to Cool Your Home Down During the Dog Days of Summer
When you think of keeping your home cool, you probably think of using air conditioning. But, that can get expensive. And, if your A/C bills are already soaring, you don’t want to add to the financial burden. So, here are 5 other ways to cool down your home without using air conditioning.
Use Programmable Thermostats
If you’re not committed to shutting off your air conditioning, one thing you can do is use a programmable thermostat. The programmable ‘stat helps control A/C usage by kicking the HVAC on and off at preset and controlled times.
Reputable and insured technicians can come to your home to help you install one, or you can try doing it yourself. Newer models of programmable thermostats are more user-friendly, but not completely idiot-proof, so unless you’re experienced with installing them, it’s probably best to have a professional do the job for you.
Block Heat
Blocking heat is another great way to reduce your reliance on air conditioning. The good news is that there are many ways to do that. You can use better insulation, caulking, and weatherstripping to keep your home warmer in cold climates.
You can use reflective barriers like white paint and reflective semi-transparent films on windows. You can also try using shading, like shrubs and trees.
Trees, of course, take time to grow, but shrubs don’t, and they can provide substantial shade for a home.
Buying fully-grown trees might be another good solution.
Remove Heat From The Home
Opening the windows and getting a cross-breeze is yet another good way to keep a house cool. Solar gain is the major way a home heats up to unbearable temperatures. Reducing this through cross-ventilation not only pumps fresh air through the house but also keeps the heat at bay.
A thermal chimney may also help reduce heat by giving it a place to go. The warm air in your house will draw upwards and out of the upper window. This is called thermal siphoning, and it’s really effective when inside air temperatures are higher than the ambient (outside) air temperatures.
Roof vents are another great way to eliminate the heat that accumulates in the attic. Vents should be located at each end of the roof and along the top every 12 feet. Ridge vents are a supplementary approach to roof vents, providing continuous ventilation.
Use Ceiling Fans
Ceiling fans are also becoming more popular and they’re an effective way to reduce your reliance on air conditioning. They use 1/10th the wattage of air conditioners and cost about $1.50 per month to run versus $20 per month for air conditioners. Of course, if you have to run more than 10 or 12 fans in the house all day, you might be better off with an air conditioning unit.
But, assuming you use fans liberally but not excessively, they can save you quite a lot of money.
Reduce Heat Sources
Reducing heat sources, like stovetop cooking and ovens. Running the dishwasher on a high-heat cycle, running dryers, and other appliances that push out a lot of heat, will also reduce your energy bills directly and your A/C bill indirectly.
